BATELSA:
Privatization of the Telecommunication Company in
the city of Barranquilla |
The Government of Colombia, through the Superintendence
of Public Services is looking for an investor for the
Empresa Barranquilla Telecomunicaciones S.A. (Batelsa)
– a local fixed operator in the city
of Barranquilla and its surrounding areas.
Batelsa is a recently created company, with no employees
and is currently renting the infrastructure to operate
from the old telecommunications company “EDT” (now
in liquidation). The resources brought in by the investor
will be used to buy this infrastructure.
Batelsa competes in the Barranquilla area with another
telecommunications company Metrotel S.A., which is 50% owned
by the incumbent international operator TELECOM. As of
December 2004, Batelsa had 122,000 clients which represented
53% of the area´s market share.
Corporación Financiera del Valle has been appointed
to manage the sale process. This process includes a prequalification
phase which ends in the first days of September 2005;
bids are due in September 26 of 2005.
